NVR or DVR

What is NVR ?

NVR (Network Video Recorder) is an IP based stand-alone video recorder that provides recording of IP video streams directly from NVR-registered remote network cameras or network video servers.

An NVR is also an electronic device similar to a DVR that records or saves digital video encoded by an IP camera. NVR- Network Video Recorder As its name suggests it is a LAN or Internet based device. NVR must have LAN or WAN network. It does not support analog camera, it only supports IP camera or network security camera.

NVR is a large network switch-sized device with a programmable electronic card inside it, along with the storage space for one or more hard-disks. The VGA and HDMI ports are available at the rear so that the monitor can be connected to it. Also a LAN port is also available to which the IP camera is connected.

Now this question will come in your mind whether it is necessary to have internet for IP CAMERA then my answer is no at all, it only connects to NETWORK, that means you can also connect it to LOCAL NETWORK.

NVRs are also available according to different channels such as 4-channel, 8-channel, 16-channel, 32-channel and 64-channel. NVR supports the camera according to its channel. For example, in a 64-channel NVR, at most 64 cameras can be installed.

A CAT6 cable is required to install or connect an NVR or IP camera, that is, a CAT6 cable is used between the camera and the NVR. Power, audio, video all travel through this CAT6 cable. NVR supports superior IP cameras up to 8MP - 12MP resolution, including all the usual features as well as smart functions like advanced facial recognition. This is an advanced camera setup.

NVR System

Features of NVR

The features of NVR are given below which you can understand very easily-

As you all know that NVR means Network Video Recorder.
It supports IP ( Internet Protocol) based camera.
LAN cable i.e. CAT6 is used for its installation.
In this, the video data is encoded or processed by the IP camera itself.
It supports a wide range of smart cameras up to 12MP.
NVR can also be viewed remotely on your mobile or desktop.
Its recording quality is very good.
Installing the NVR and its attached camera is very easy.
In its setup, the power to the camera is given by the POE switch.
In this, the cable from the camera connects to the switch, not to the NVR.
NVR installation is costly compared to DVR.
In this, the IP camera can also be setup wirelessly.

Benefits of NVR

It is about two to three times more expensive than HD camera, but despite being two to three times more expensive, the quality inside NVR is very good, meaning if you are using a 2 MP camera inside this camera and IP are using 2 MEGA-PIXEL inside CAMERA, then there is about 20-30% difference between them. Overall we can say that camera quality is very high.

Also talk about DURABILITY that HD CAMERA's LIFE is 2 to 5 years, but after 2 years its color quality is its performance OVERALL the picture quality that would have got worse. Talking about NVR, their life is up to 10 years. And their quality is always good. Overall durability of IP camera is very good.

How is the NVR system set up?

Wherever you are planting the IP camera, you can connect via wire and also connect to wireless which is not possible in DVR. In DVR you have to pull the cable from wherever you want to install the camera but in NVR cable is not needed.

In NVR, network switch are installed in the middle, you can understand from the network switch like – 4 cameras are placed at a distance of 200 meters in a factory, if there was a DVR then 200 meters from all the cameras. The cable has to be brought to the DVR, but you can make a junction by putting network switch in the NVR and only 1 cable has to be brought to the NVR. Whenever we talk about a big network where your camera quantity is high, there is a mall, there is a big society, there is a big factory where 200,300,500 cameras are required, there is a need for NVR.

How to Install IP Camera?

IP camera installation requires some different devices as compared to DVR like if you setup 4-channel NVR then mainly 4 IP camera, 4-channel NVR, hard-disk, 8 channel POE switch, CAT6 cable, RJ-45 connector, 1 patch cable, and a screen required.

IP camera installation

The first thing in IP camera installation is the location of the IP camera and NVR, that is, you have to choose the right place where you want to keep the NVR along with this, you have to choose all the places where you have to install the IP camera.

After this, you have to install/fix the IP camera at the place chosen by you.

Now the wiring work has to be started according to the IP camera, in which CAT6 cable will have to be laid from NVR to each camera.

After this, RJ-45 connector is to be installed on both ends of the cable and connect the connector to the camera.

Now open the NVR and fit the hard-disk in it.

Now all the cables (RJ-45) connected to the camera have to be connected to the POE switch and through the patch cable, the NVR is also to be connected to the POE switch.

Now the screen has to be turned ON and the NVR has to be connected to the screen.

➤NVR setup screen will open in front of you where you have to set date/time/password etc.

Now set the IP address of the same series according to the camera in NVR.

After this the NVR will detect the cameras that you have to add to the NVR either by auto or manually.

After this the camera will appear on the screen.

Now you can set the location of the camera according to your need, but first of all, format the hard-disk once so that the recording can start.

What is DVR?

DVR i.e. Video Digital Recorder It is an electronic device that processes, compresses, and records the video signal received from the CCTV camera and saves it to hard-disk in digital format. It is a device the size of a network switch or setup box, with an electronic card programmed inside, in addition a hard-disk space present where the hard-disk is installed to storage the video.

There are BNC ports available on the back side of the DVR to which you can connect the CCTV camera along with this, HDMI, VGA and network ports are also available in the DVR so that it can be connected to the monitor and can be online by connecting the DVR to the Internet by the network port.

DVR are also available according to different channels such as 4-channel, 8-channel, 16-channel, 32-channel. DVR supports the camera according to its channel. For example, in a 32-channel DVR, at most 32 cameras can be installed. Similarly 4 cameras with 4-channels and only 8 cameras with 8-channels can connected.

3+1 coaxial cable is used for CCTV installation, i.e. DVR and camera are connected with coaxial cable. Power, video and audio travel with coaxial cable. DVR system only supports camera in formats like Analog, AHD, HD-TVI etc.

Analog camera which used long before in DVR system, then TV line camera started coming in it like 480,500,550,600,780 when CRT monitor was running, after that PIXEL CAMERA started coming in it. Like 720P i.e. 1 MEGA PIXEL. When 1MP started, HD technology (HIGH DEFINITION) came like – HD, HDCVI, HDTVI, AHD started being used in DVR.

DVR System

Features of DVR

The features of DVR are given below which you can understand very easily and you can compare with NVR-

As you all know, the full name of DVR is called Digital Video Recorder.
It supports analog or co-axial cable based cameras.
In this video data is encoded or processed by DVR.
It usually supports cameras up to 2,4 or 6 MP resolution.
DVR can also be viewed remotely on your mobile or computer.
Recording quality of DVR is much lower than that of NVR.
In its setup, the power to the camera is given by SMPS.
The cable from each camera in the DVR connects directly to the DVR.
Installation of a DVR is much more complicated than that of an NVR.
Installation of DVR is much cheaper than NVR, it can say from an estimate that 35% is cheaper.

How DVR System Works?

Wherever you get CCTV cameras installed, like in a FACTORY, SOCIETY or OFFICE, you have installed 16 cameras which are at different places, then from all those 16 cameras to DVR, co-axial cable has to be installed separately for all the cameras.

The DVR also has a power supply which works to power the camera as well as the display from which you can see the live output of the camera. Along with this, the DVR also has a LAN port, which works to connect the DVR to the Internet, so that you can watch the camera live remotely from anywhere.

Advantages and Disadvantages of DVR Systems

Advantages : DVR system is very economical system, it is very cheap, most of the cameras installed in small commercial places use DVR technology, it is cheap as well as installing and using it is also very simple. Inside it the cameras come up to 3,4,5,6 MEGA PIXEL.

Disadvantages : One drawback inside it is that it maintenance costs more than the NVR technology, as you must have seen if there is a camera inside the long distance, then the waves come BLURNESS because there are BNC connectors inside it which connects the camera to the DVR. There are lots of problem occur in BNC  which increases the cost of maintenance. DVR installation is very complex and very low quality of picture. Durability is very less in compare to NVR.

How to Install CCTV?

To install CCTV, first of all you must have all the tools related to the installation. If the installation tools are not complete, there will be many obstacles in the work. If you set up a 4-channel DVR, then it mainly requires you to have 4 camera, 4-channel DVR, 4-channel SMPS, co-axial cable, BNC connectors and screen.

The first thing in camera installation is the location of the camera and DVR, that is, you have to choose the right place where you want to keep the DVR along with this, you have to choose all the places where you have to install the camera.

After this, you have to install/fix the camera at the place chosen by you.

Now the wiring work has to be started according to the camera, in which co-axial cable will have to be laid from DVR to each camera.

After this, put the BNC and power connectors on both ends of the cable and connect the connector to the camera.

Now open the DVR and fit the hard-disk in it.

Now all the cables (BNC) attached to the camera have to be connected to the DVR and SMPS.

Now the screen has to be turned ON and the DVR has to be connected to the screen.

DVR setup screen will open in front of you where you have to set date/time/password etc.

You will see all the cameras as soon as you set up the DVR.

Now you can set the location of the camera according to your need, but first of all, format the hard-disk once so that the recording can start.

Now the recording of the CCTV installed by you has started.

Which Camera Should You Choose?

Now the question must be coming inside you that which system should be installed DVR or NVR? Your BUDGET ALLOW which system you have to implement.

If you have to install a camera in a big project then you should go with IP camera because if you compare HD camera and IP camera then HD camera will become very complicated in big project and the cost of cable is very high. Its not more durable and maintenance  will high.

Where you have to see the budget and also need CCTV, then you can use DVR system, nowadays good cameras have started coming in DVR too, which requires less maintenance. Also it is easy to install.

You have both options in front of you, which one you want to install will depend on you but if you talk about big project and long duration and quality then you should go with IP CAMERA and if you want to install NORMALLY only CAMERA then you install HD camera.
