Relation between SIP, IP Telephony and VoIP : Previously I have written an article about VoIP but in this article I will tell you what is SIP, what is IP telephony and what is VoIP and what is their relationship with each other. Perhaps all of you must have heard before about the three subjects - SIP, IP telephony and VoIP, but today I am going to give very exciting information.
The SIP was developed by four people and later approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 1996 and standardized in 1999. SIP was designed to meet the emerging needs of IP-based communications.
Which is used to initiate, maintain, modify, and terminate real-time sessions that include video, voice, messaging, and other communication applications and services between two or more endpoints on an IP network.
SIP itself does not provide communication services. Instead, the specification of the protocol defines the inter-implementation of SIP attributes, called primitives, that can be used to facilitate various services.
Primitive SIPs allow additional information to be embedded in the message, such as linking user's picture to directory information to enable media-rich caller ID.

Devices using SIP can communicate directly with each other, or communicate through a SIP proxy. SIP proxies act as an intermediary system that can assist in offloading tasks that would otherwise be controlled by the SIP protocol.
The SIP determines the final system to be used for the session, the media and media parameters, and whether the called party agrees to engage in the communication. Once this is ensured, SIP establishes call parameters at either end of the communication.
Also handles call transfer and termination. The protocol is supported by both IPv4 and IPv6. As an example, in Voice over IP (VoIP) calls, SIP occurs between two devices, such as a computer or phone, in an application layer. The SDP payload is moved to the SIP message.
Generally VoIP will work with other protocols such as Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol (SRTP) and Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP).

As I have mentioned above that VoIP is a popular IP telephony implementation that only supports voice communication. This technique is also known as "IP telephony" because it uses the Internet protocol for the transmitted packets of data.
Yes it's a very special feature that VoIP allows you to operate your phone system over the Internet rather than using a traditional public switched network.
With many advantages VoIP phones can provide businesses over a regular phone service. Monthly costs can be reduced significantly and they allow calls from any location with a computer and Internet connection. This is why VoIP is becoming an increasingly chosen technology for communication for business owners.

The full name of SIP is Session Initiation Protocol Which is used to start, maintain, modify, and end real-time sessions. IP telephony is the aspect of communication that allows individuals to communicate with each other at a distance through the Internet.Voice Over Internet Protocol is known as VoIP, an advanced technology that allows businesses and employees to communicate more effectively with traditional phone lines. To get complete information, you will have to read the entire article, now going to discuss in detail about SIP, IP telephony, VoIP.
SIP - Session Initiation Protocol
Full name is Session Initiation Protocol. The main use of SIP is for signaling protocol used to initiate, maintain, modify, and terminate real-time sessions in which video, voice, messaging, and other communication applications and services between two or more endpoints on an IP network Is included. The SIP was developed by four people and later approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 1996 and standardized in 1999. Features of SIP
The communication protocol defines five characteristics at the time of establishing and ending multimedia sessions. These are the five characteristics of SIP which are given below-➤Location of User
➤Capabilities of User
➤Session Setup
➤Availability of User
➤Session Management
A variety of multimedia SIP sessions include Internet telephony calls, video conferencing, and other forms of unified communications. The protocol can be used to invite participants to uni-cast or multicast sessions that do not necessarily involve the initiator.
If we talk about the example of SIP request. We rely on the features and functions of SIP's request protocol. Here are some simple requests that can create protocols.
Invite — Which starts a dialog that will initiate a call.
Ask — Which confirms the other user has responded to a request.
Update — Which can be used to modify a session without changing the dialogue’s state.
Cancel — Which stops pending requests.
Bye — Which ends dialog and calls.
What is IP Telephony
Telephony, simply we can say that it is a technology that allows individuals to communicate with each other at a distance, and IP telephony is the aspect of communication that allows individuals to communicate with each other at a distance via the Internet.
IP Telephony and benefits |
Day by day IP telephony is becoming an increasingly popular form of communication, often replacing traditional telephone (older phone) systems. IP phones, sometimes called VoIP telephones, are designed for SIP phones or soft-phones VoIP, and are connected to data networks (or broadband routers in small businesses) rather than phone networks.

Internet protocol telephony (IP telephony) networks are used to create, provide, and access voice, data, or other types of telephone communication. IP telephony is an IP-based network that provides traditional telephonic communication over the Internet - through the Internet Service Provider (ISP) or directly from the Telecommunication service provider. Video communication between two or more users supported by IP Telephony also .
In simple terms, IP telephony (Internet Protocol Telephony) is a technology that uses packet-switched connections to Internet protocols to transmit voice, fax, and other types of information in traditionally dedicated circuits of public switched telephone networks (PSTNs). - Used on switched connections. The calls travel as packets of data over the share lines in a reliable flow to the user.
Components of IP telephony
Now I will discuss on the basic elements of IP telephony system. The main elements of IP telephony are given below-
End Device : These may be IP phones, traditional telephones / or audio-equipped personal computers / Laptop etc.
Gateway : Handles signal translation between traditional telephone devices and IP network devices.
Gatekeepers/proxies : Gatekeeper / proxies manage central calls such as user location, authentication, bandwidth management, address translation etc.
➤In IP telephony system the cost of voice network is very low.
➤Reduce device administration costs.
➤Enhanced customer satisfaction through the use of centralized network control and management distributed call center application. Enhanced communication capabilities and productivity for remote and mobile employees. IP telephony works. IP telephony uses the "Internet Protocol" to communicate over the Internet via digital means.
➤By using this technology instead of traditional phone systems, business owners can leverage hardware and applications with an Internet connection to communicate more effectively.
➤By taking advantage of IP telephony, the user can connect voice, data, video and multimedia technologies together that are digitally based.

What is VoIP
VoIP is known as Voice Over Internet Protocol , an advanced technology that allows businesses and employees to communicate more effectively with traditional phone lines.
Open this given link for more information : How does a VoIP phone work?
It's not surprising that traditional phone systems operate on public switched networks, VoIP converts our voice into information packets that can be transmitted over the Internet. Since the Internet uses a special protocol (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol or TCP / IP), this development is called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
VoIP is very important for business purpose, if you want to know why VoIP is necessary for business, then open the given link-
With many advantages VoIP phones can provide businesses over a regular phone service. Monthly costs can be reduced significantly and they allow calls from any location with a computer and Internet connection. This is why VoIP is becoming an increasingly chosen technology for communication for business owners.
Due to some special features of the VoIP is more than telephone service over the Internet. Yes, it converts analog phone signals into digital signals that can be sent over the Internet. But, this technology also incorporates video, data conferencing, and desktop share. Communication is a more economical form of comparison to standard phone lines used by traditional phone companies.
